The Chargers snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, scoring all of their six runs in the inning.

With the bases loaded and two out, Inman broke the ice with a two-run single to left off Red Devils’ starter Chandler Dale. That prompted Jeff coach Derek Ellis to pull Dale for senior right-hander Drew Ellis.

The Red Devil reliever started his stint by giving up an RBI single to center Matt Meihls to plate Cory McCray from second. On that play, an errant throw to home plate allowed Inman to score to put Carroll up 4-0.

Later in the inning, Meihls came home from third when Jeff tried to tag out Trevor Snyder between first and second in a rundown. An RBI double by Jacob Hansen ended the Chargers’ scoring.

Both of the Red Devils’ runs came in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff sophomore Drew Campbell had a one-out RBI single to plate Miah Phelps. Later in the frame, Campbell scored on a wild pitch.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Derek Ellis said. “You can’t win the conference or the sectional today, so we’ll just keep working toward that.”

The Red Devils collected only two hits. Along with Campbell’s fifth-inning base hit, freshman catcher Trey Dempsey had a single.

Dale got the loss on the mound. In 4 2/3 innings, the senior righty yielded four runs (three earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.

“He did a very good job. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t put the ball in play and give him some support,” Derek Ellis said.

Drew Ellis allowed two unearned runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings. He fanned three and walked two.

The Red Devils’ defense did not give much support to its pitchers, as it committed four errors.

“I don’t think it was jitters,” Coach Ellis. “I think that was just early-season situations we’re in, where we made wrong decisions. Even though we had four, I don’t think they were crucial.”

Jeff will host Plainfield at 5:30 p.m. today.
