SOUTHERN INDIANA — The Jeffersonville Red Devils, the No. 1 ranked baseball team in Class 4A, bounced back on Tuesday after suffering a loss in Monday’s season opener against Fort Wayne Carroll.

Jeff only needed six innings to push across 14 runs on visiting Plainfield, winning 14-4.

The Red Devils looked to Dawson Willis to get them on the right track. Willis, who was taking the mound for his first varsity start of his career, responded by tossing 5 1/3 innings surrendering just one run.

“Dawson looked excellent tonight,” Jeff coach Derek Ellis said.

Willis received a world’s worth of run support and after three innings was ahead 13-1. Josh Burke was big at the plate for the Red Devils, going 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles and an RBI. Teammates Drew Ellis and Nolan Fertig also each had a double.

“We did a real good job hitting tonight,” Coach Ellis said. “With 15 hits, everyone looked good at the plate.

Trey Dempsey also stood out for Jeff. The Red Devil catcher went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the batter’s box. He also anchored the Jeff defense from behind the plate.

“Trey did a nice job catching Dawson tonight. He helps control the game defensively and really handles our pitchers well,” Ellis said of his catcher.

Jeffersonville handled its first loss to well and was able to move forward with confidence.

“The guys responded like I expected them, too and played like a really good baseball team after a tough loss and a bad night at the plate against a really good pitcher,” said Coach Ellis.

“That’s the good thing about baseball. You’re able to get right back on the horse. Unlike football, we didn’t have to wait all week to get back out there.”

The 1-1 Red Devils will be back in action next Monday when they travel to Louisville Trinity.
